Exotherme vascular laser is a vascular laser treatment designed specifically for the treatment of spider veins. Spider veins are fine, red or purple veins on the legs. Exotherme is non-invasive, safe and effective and approved by the FDA. By and large it is a painless treatment. When considering laser vascular vein removal Exotherme is the gold-standard.
Exotherme laser at Palm Clinic Auckland, NZ is light of a particular wavelength that is delivered into the skin over the spider veins. The wavelength is attracted to the ‘chromophore’ of Haemoglobin found in blood causing selective photocoagulation. In practical terms, this means that the blood in the spider veins is heated up causing coagulation of these vessels. Once the treated vein is closed your body will naturally absorb it away over a few weeks.
While spider veins usually don’t cause symptoms, they can be of cosmetic concern to many. A lot of our clients wish to reduce the appearance of spider veins so they don’t have to cover their legs up, especially during the warmer months.
Exotherme is a good option, particularly for those who are needle averse as it is relatively pain free, and no injections are required. There is also no requirement to wear compression stockings and no risk of deep vein thrombosis.
There are very few potential side effects associated with Exotherme laser. There is a very small risk of burning the skin but we have not seen this side effect to date.
Your therapist at Palm Clinic Auckland, NZ will explain the procedure and what to expect.
After fitting you with safety glasses to protect from the laser, they will apply cool ultrasound gel to the area to be treated. The exotherme laser head is applied to the area and once the target spider veins are visualised, the laser is activated. The discomfort is minimal. The procedure will take 30-45 minutes per treatment session.
Unlike sclerotherapy (spider vein injection therapy), after Exotherme laser there is no requirement for wearing compression stockings or walking after treatment. You will notice the treated vein will look a little inflamed and over the coming weeks may develop a ‘cat scratch’ appearance. Slowly over a few weeks they will start to reduce in appearance. You will require at least three treatments to achieve desired results.

Spider vein treatment is regarded by medical insurance companies to be a cosmetic treatment and is therefore not covered by medical insurance. It is important to note however that if you do have symptoms related to spider veins it may be because there are underlying varicose veins that are not visible on the surface. These can be detected by an ultrasound and may be covered by insurance, so we recommend an ultrasound map for all patients with vein problems.
