Vascular Laser Vein Removal Treatment with Exotherme – Auckland NZ

Exotherme is a vascular laser treatment for vein removal, which is especially good at treating leg spider veins. It is safe, effective and usually painless, which is why we have been performing Exotherme vascular vein removal successfully for 10 years at our clinic in Auckland, NZ.

How Does Exotherme Vascular Laser Work?

Exotherme laser is light of a particular wavelength that is delivered into the skin over the spider veins. The laser causes the blood in the spider veins to heat up and the blood vessels to coagulate and close. Once the treated vein is closed, it is naturally absorbed by the body over a few weeks.

At Palm Clinic in Auckland, NZ, we typically use Exotherme laser on the legs. For vascular laser treatment on the face we usually recommend ELOS IPL or coolglide vascular laser.

Exotherme laser treatment will often be preceded by varicose vein treatment with endovenous laser ablation, radiofrequency ablation or ultrasound guided sclerotherapy.

What Are The Benefits Of Laser Vascular Treatment?

While spider veins usually don’t cause symptoms, they can be of cosmetic concern to many. Many of our clients wish to reduce the appearance of spider veins so they don’t feel they have to cover up their legs, especially during the warmer months.

Exotherme laser is a good option, particularly for those who are needle averse as it is relatively pain free, and no injections are required. There is also no requirement to wear compression stockings and no risk of deep vein thrombosis.

Vascular Laser Side Effects

There are very few potential side effects associated with Exotherme laser. There is a very small risk of burning the skin but we have not seen this side effect to date.

What Happens On The Day Of Laser Treatment

When you arrive at Palm Clinic Auckland, NZ, your doctor will explain the procedure and what to expect.

After fitting you with safety glasses to protect you from the laser, they will apply cool ultrasound gel to the treatment area. The Exotherme laser head is applied to the area and once the target spider veins are visualised, the laser is activated. The discomfort is minimal.

The procedure will take 45 minutes per treatment session.

What Happens After Treatment

Unlike sclerotherapy (spider vein injection therapy), after Exotherme laser there is no requirement for wearing compression stockings or walking after treatment.

You will notice the treated vein will look a little inflamed and over the coming weeks and may develop a ‘cat scratch’ appearance. Slowly over a few weeks they will start to reduce in appearance. You will require at least three treatments to achieve desired results.

Spider vein treatment is regarded by medical insurance companies to be a cosmetic treatment and is therefore not covered by medical insurance. It is important to note however that if you do have symptoms related to spider veins it may be because there are underlying varicose veins that are not visible on the surface. These can be detected by an ultrasound and may be covered by insurance, so we recommend an ultrasound map for all patients with vein problems.
