Dull Skin – Meaning, Causes and Treatment – Auckland NZ

One of the unfortunate side effects of ageing is that skin can lose it’s smoothness, elasticity and dewy appearance. In short, it can start to appear dull. At Palm Clinic, Auckland NZ, the Cosmetic Medicine team has the experience and technology to help. Below, we discuss dull skin causes, and dull skin treatment.

What Causes Dull Skin?

As the skin ages there are a number of things that happen both from chronological ageing and from external factors such as sun exposure, smoking and environmental pollutants.

  • The dermis thins, which gives the appearance of dry skin and makes it look less vibrant.
  • The epidermis (outer skin layer) also thins and develops a thicker layer of dead cells on top called the stratum corneum.
  • Ageing skin becomes discoloured from brown pigmentation and broken thread or facial veins.
  • Ageing skin loses collagen and elastin which leads to poor elasticity and dry skin.
  • Ageing skin loses support due to resorption of bone, poor facial muscle tone and loss of fat. The structures beneath the skin shrink away, leading to sagging of the skin.
  • There is an increase in pore size and a duller texture to ageing skin.
  • Scars such as acne scarring can leave depressed marks on the skin.
  • Wrinkles and lines appear.

Dull Skin Treatment

At Palm Clinic, Auckland NZ, we are often asked how to rejuvenate dull skin. With cosmetic medicine, we can address each of these issues (as applies to you), in turn:

  1. Elos Medical IPL treatments can even skin texture by removing brown spots and facial veins as well as stimulating collagen formation.
  2. The thickened stratum corneum can be reduced with medical grade skin care such as topical vitamin C (which promotes collagen growth) and vitamin A (which speeds up turnover of skin cells) which remove the dead skin cells and promote a more hydrated, healthy skin. Our clients have often spent a lot of money on dull skin products from the pharmacy or department store. In order to optimise results, the higher levels of active ingredients within medical grade skin care make these the best products to brighten dull skin.
  3. A medifacial/chemical peel (e.g. glycolic acid) breaks down the outer layer of dead cells and helps build a more functional and healthy skin. These are both prescribed by our skin therapist and tailored to your skin type.
  4. Fraxel Laser treatments stimulate collagen production to significantly reduce acne scars, sun spots, brown pigment and thicken the dermis. This improves pore size and skin texture to achieve a more radiant skin.
  5. Dermal needling (Dermapen) is a great dull skin remedy. Dermapen damages the skin in a controlled way to promote collagen growth and a smoother skin surface that better reflects the light.
  6. Loss of underlying support structures such as collagen, muscle and fat can be replaced with hyaluronic acid Dermal Fillers, which replace lost volume and provide better support for the skin giving it a healthier glow.
  7. Wrinkles and lines can be directly treated with injectables such as Botox® and dermal fillers to smooth the skin’s surface.
  8. No matter your skin type, SPF will protect the skin from further UV damage, age spots and free radical damage.
