Before and after PPL treatment for sun damage and uneven skin tone at Palm Clinic, NZ.

At Palm Clinic, we believe that beauty is more than skin deep – it’s about investing in skin health with science-backed treatments that build the skin’s integrity. Our clinic in Auckland, NZ has over 30 years experience delivering light treatments, and PPL has become a fast favourite among our team.

What is Pulsed Polychromatic Light (PPL)?

Pulsed Polychromatic Light (PPL) is essentially a more powerful, safer, and more precise evolution of Intense Pulsed Light (IPL). It’s ideal for those seeking faster results, better comfort, and broader skin rejuvenation with minimal downtime.

PPL therapy uses pulsed light wavelengths to target multiple skin concerns in a single treatment. Unlike traditional lasers, which operate on a single wavelength, PPL uses carefully calibrated bursts of polychromatic light, allowing it to address a wide range of skin issues – from spider veins, pigmentation spots and uneven skin tone to rosacea and acne scars.

PPL is often seen as a more refined and effective evolution of Intense Pulsed Light (IPL). By offering enhanced customisation, reduced discomfort and lasting results while preserving the integrity of your skin’s surface.

A 2014 study in Dermatologic Surgery demonstrated that polychromatic light significantly improves skin texture and pigmentation, particularly in patients with sun-damaged skin¹.

How PPL Outperforms IPL

PPL and IPL are both light-based skin treatments used to improve pigmentation, redness, and signs of aging, however PPL is a more advanced, refined form of IPL and offers several benefits.

  • Superior Effectiveness
    • PPL is more effective at treating sun damage, redness, rosacea, acne, and pigmentation.
    • IPL still works but tends to deliver slower, less noticeable improvements.
  • Longer-Lasting Results
    • Clinical studies show PPL results last longer with regular maintenance.
    • IPL usually requires more frequent touch-ups to maintain benefits.
  • Greater Comfort
    • PPL includes advanced cooling systems for a gentler treatment experience.
    • IPL can feel hotter and less comfortable during application.
  • Advanced Technology
    • PPL is a next-generation form of IPL with enhanced precision, speed, and integrated cooling.
    • IPL is older technology with less targeted light delivery.
  • Improved Safety
    • PPL is safer for a wider range of skin tones, with reduced risk of side effects.
    • IPL carries a higher risk, especially for darker skin types.
  • Minimal Downtime
    • IPL can cause redness/swelling for some days after treatment whereas BBL typically causes less post-treatment redness.

How PPL Works

PPL works by delivering controlled pulses of light energy deep into the skin’s layers. These are selectively absorbed by pigmented cells, red spots and spider veins, converting to heat. This controlled heat response breaks down unwanted pigmentation and blood vessels, while also stimulating collagen production and skin cell turnover. The result is a significant reduction in spider veins alongside a significant improvement in uneven skin tone, pigmentation and radiance.

This treatment is non-ablative – meaning it does not damage the outer layer of the skin – making it both effective and gentle.

What to Expect from Your PPL Appointment

Your journey begins with a personalised consultation. We assess your skin condition, discuss your goals, and tailor the treatment plan to your unique profile. Before your session begins, your skin will be thoroughly cleansed and protective eyewear will be provided.

The procedure typically takes 20-45 minutes, depending on the area treated. A cooling gel is applied to help the light penetrate evenly and comfortably. During the treatment, you’ll feel brief pulses of light on the skin – the sensation is often described as a light snap or flick of an elastic band. While not painful, some areas may feel slightly more sensitive than others.

Afterwards, the skin may appear slightly red or flushed – similar to a mild sunburn – for a few hours. Some dark spots may temporarily darken before flaking or fading over the next several days.

PPL Aftercare

PPL requires minimal recovery time, but thoughtful aftercare is advised to maximise results:

  • Avoid sun exposure and apply a high-SPF, broad-spectrum sunscreen daily to protect from the harsh NZ sun.
  • Refrain from using retinoids, exfoliants, or active serums (like vitamin C or glycolic acid) for at least 3–5 days.
  • Keep your skin hydrated with a gentle moisturiser or post-treatment balm.
  • Do not pick, scrub, or peel treated areas – let your skin shed naturally.

You may wear makeup 24 hours after your treatment, but we recommend giving your skin time to breathe if possible.

Intended PPL Results

Results vary depending on the concern being treated, but most clients begin to notice improvement within a week of their first session. Brown spots fade, redness diminishes, and skin becomes clearer, brighter, and smoother.

A series of 3–5 treatments spaced 3–4 weeks apart is typically recommended for optimal results. With continued treatments, PPL can significantly improve the appearance of:

  • Sun damage and age spots
  • Redness and rosacea
  • Acne and post-inflammatory pigmentation
  • Enlarged pores and fine lines

In a review published in Journal of Cosmetic and Laser Therapy, polychromatic light devices were shown to improve photoaged skin and inflammatory conditions with minimal side effects².

Clients often report a refreshed, luminous glow that lasts for several months. Maintenance treatments every 6-12 months are recommended to preserve your results.
