As we progress though our 40s, the bones and fat of the face start to shrink away, causing the overlying skin to sag, forming folds over the eyes, hollowing under the eyes, flattening of once rounded cheeks and formation of jowls. This can give a tired, saggy appearance to the face. We call this shrinkage of bone and fat ‘volume loss’. We can treat volume loss by placing dermal filler under the skin to mimic the lost bone and fat: we call this ‘volumizing”.

These photos show the effect ‘volumizing’ the brow and frown area with dermal filler. I have used one syringe of Juvederm Ultraplus shared between both brows and the frown area. As you can see it has taken up the excess skin over the eyes and restored the curved contour of the brow bone, giving the natural light reflection under the brow that we often highlight with makeup. The eyes look fresher and more open. Placing this hydrating, nourishing hyaluranon substance has also improved the quality of the skin, reducing the appearance of pores and enhancing radiance.

This patient had a varicose ulcer for 4-5 months prior to treatment. Varicose ulcers are generally treated by compression hosiery and regular dressings but very often they do not heal until the underlying varicose vein has been treated.  This then improves venous circulation which in turn reduces oedema in the tissues and clears tissue toxins more effectively.

The photos show complete resolution of the varicose ulcer.

8 years of Botox® and Fillers. These photos show one of my lovely patients (you’ll recognise her from the video on our home page) aged 46 when she first started coming to me, compared with a recent photo aged 54. She’s had no surgery, only Botox® and dermal fillers. That’s right, she’s 54 in the photo on the right. I think she looks fresher and more vibrant now than 8 years ago, and wonderfully natural.

Dr Karl A Ekbom proposed venous disease as a cause of restless leg syndrome (RLS) in 1944. Severe rosacea treated with ELOS IPL

Rosacea (pronounced “rose ay shah”) is a common skin condition usually seen on the face. It often first appears as a general redness on the nose and cheeks, and sometimes on the forehead or chin. Many sufferers will blush easily. Rosacea comes and goes, but if left untreated it can develop into a perpetual skin redness with feelings of burning, stinging and irritation. Pimple-like bumps called acne rosacea may develop, and in severe cases the nose skin may become swollen and bumpy (rhinophyma).

By using a full dose of Botox® the crows feet on this woman have been completely removed.  Not everyone wants all the crows feet removed but in this age group it does provide a more youthful appearance.

Older women prefer to have some crows feet visible as this is a more natural look in the post 40 age group.  We achieve this by using a smaller dose of Botox® targeted to specific muscles to allow some lines to remain but reducing the overall wrinkling when smiling.

The difference between stiockings bought over the counter and those bought at a specialist centre is the compression.  Over the counter stockings will often not state what compression they provide or it will be less than 15mmHg.  Specialist center stockings will provide a compression of 15-20mmHg for Class 1 stockings or 20-30mmHg for Class 2.  The mmHg stands for millimetres of mercury and is the same pressure used to measure blood pressure.  TED stockins (white) are often used in the hospital after surgery.  These provide support but not as strong compression as a Class 1 or 2 stocking.
